Strategies to Increased MSP Solids
Metered size presses were originally developed to overcome speed and solids limitations in conventional size presses. Trends to pigment these systems further utilize this asset as a precoat applicator. As formulators transition to pigmented metered size press (MSP) coatings, much effort is being made in formulation development in the high solids regime, paralleling blade coating technology.
High-solids precoats are well suited for programs focused on developing improved optical and print properties. Increased ink gloss and reduced levels of backtrap mottle can be attained when precoats provide increased fiber coverage, and non-uniformity in topcoat weight is minimized. High-solids precoats are also an effective means of improving final sheet smoothness, gloss, brightness and opacity.
